Short-eared Owls winter here in Oklahoma, often sharing their territory with the more common Northern Harriers.  Each winter afternoon as the sun drops below the horizon, the harriers call it a day.  Short-eared Owls then rise up from the tall grasses to pursue mice and rats during the night.  I was fortunate to photograph this one on a fence post in the prairie just west of Sooner Lake in Noble County.
